چکیده
Sensory systems have adopted various ways to enhance detection and discrimination. A recent study shows a novel spatial organization of sensory cells in the peripheral olfactory system in mice for better odor detection.

Effects of chronic peripheral olfactory loss on functional brain networks
The effects of sensory loss on central processing in various sensory systems have already been described. The olfactory system holds the special ability to be activated by a sensorimotor act, without the presentation of an odor. In this study, we investigated brain changes related to chronic peripheral smell loss. We included 11 anosmic patients (eight female, three male; mean age, 43.5 years) ...
متن کاملRepulsive Interactions Shape the Morphologies and Functional Arrangement of Zebrafish Peripheral Sensory Arbors
BACKGROUND Trigeminal sensory neurons detect thermal and mechanical stimuli in the skin through their elaborately arborized peripheral axons. We investigated the developmental mechanisms that determine the size and shape of individual trigeminal arbors in zebrafish and analyzed how these interactions affect the functional organization of the peripheral sensory system. RESULTS Time-lapse imagi...
متن کاملAfter the Holy Grail Establishing a Molecular Basis for Mammalian Olfaction
The quest to identify mammalian odorant receptors was a triumph of molecular biology. The characterization of these molecules has provided extraordinary insight into the strategy used by one neuronal system to organize sensory structures and code complex information. The odorant receptor genes have also served as powerful tools in understanding genomic organization and gene regulation.
متن کاملTemporal signatures of taste quality driven by active sensing.
Animals actively acquire sensory information from the outside world, with rodents sniffing to smell and whisking to feel. Licking, a rapid motor sequence used for gustation, serves as the primary means of controlling stimulus access to taste receptors in the mouth. Using a novel taste-quality discrimination task in head-restrained mice, we measured and compared reaction times to four basic tast...
متن کاملRecovery of Olfactory Function Induces Neuroplasticity Effects in Patients with Smell Loss
The plasticity of brain function, especially reorganization after stroke or sensory loss, has been investigated extensively. Based upon its special characteristics, the olfactory system allows the investigation of functional networks in patients with smell loss, as it holds the unique ability to be activated by the sensorimotor act of sniffing, without the presentation of an odor. In the presen...
